Hello, my lovely writers! Happy Monday and happy new year!
Today, I wanted to just talk about a few websites or programs that are helpful for any writer out there.
Really, all you need to write is a pen and paper.
But to write a good and accurate book, sometimes you need more information—a specific name or a word to stop you from using "big" so much. Maybe you just need to know how many words you actually wrote. There are several websites that can help us out with each of these problems.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
Thesaurus.com is basically the most helpful website for every writer!
Is your writing boring? Keep using plain words like “big” or “sad”? Just type those in on Thesaurus.com and it’ll provide you with tons of words you can use instead.
This is a huge way that you can improve your writing.
As a writer, I know that sometimes we can forget words for certain things. Sometimes we can’t think of another word that means something simple like “angry” or “happy”.
Finding synonyms for words like that is so superbly helpful, since we don’t want to fill our books with those.
Often, we use complex words a lot in writing, but have you ever realized that you’ve used a word a lot and you know the context it goes in, but don’t know what it means?
I have.
A lot.
And let’s be honest. Typing in the word and getting the definition is far faster than finding it in a 2 pound book.
This website may not get as much use as thesaurus.com, but it is just as helpful.
If there is one website that all writers use, it’s Google.
Basically everyone in America uses Google.
You can look up anything you want on there. It’s incredibly helpful for research. This is probably more useful than both thesaurus.com and dictionary.com.
Think about it.
Google gives you access to worldwide information about anything you need.
Does your character get injured? Find out how realistic this injury actually is. Find out how much blood they’ll probably lose. Find out how long they'd most likely be in the hospital.
Do you need a different way to describe blonde hair?
Google’s got you covered.
The truth is, if you don’t use Google, you’re screwed.
This is a website I absolutely could not live without.
I think most of us have a certain goal for how many words per chapter—anything from 400 to 2,000. So it’s helpful to have something that counts the words.
And get this.
Wordcounter.com also does grammar checking which is very useful for all of us.
This website is also great for students. You can write papers that have to be a specific word length and you can edit it at the same time.
Hardly a day goes by where wordcounter.com is not open on my computer.
I’ve mentioned nameberry.com before and that’s because it truly is the best website for naming characters.
You can search all different types of things. How ever many syllables you want in a name, just search it. Want an edgy name or an artsy name? You can search that too.
There you have it.
I give you my top 5 websites for any writer:
Thesaurus.com
Dictionary.com
Google.com
Wordcounter.com
Nameberry.com
If you guys have any websites to add to my list, just message me in the contact bar below!
Happy writing!
